1971 Vintage Airstream

The Silver Armadillo is a 1971 Airstream travel trailer renovated from a neglected empty shell into a cozy and bright home full of life.

The challenge was to design a space that would comfortably function for two adults while promoting a connection to nature, keeping a minimal environmental footprint, and maintaining travel and off-grid capabilities. The design celebrates the original shell, the imperfections that come along with it, and the abundant natural light that the unique windows let in.

Aesthetically, the goal was to create a space that is cozy, bright, and airy that balances modern design with vintage charm. Space planning efforts maximized the amount of natural light utilizing a shared open plan while creating different functional zones help the space feel larger. Using salvaged materials for the wood floors, shelves, and interior wall cladding was a sustainable choice to reduce resources as well as a way to bring in aged finish materials to marry the new finishes with the well-worn airstream shell.
